The $18 Home Office Makeover...

I'm not kidding! The whole office makeover cost a mere $18.
How I hear you asking?...
Well I simply used, reused, rearranged, painted, covered, and glued
a whole lot of decor items I already had,
as well as making and creating some new things.
There was a cost of $2 for a piece of gorgeous striped  remnant fabric
 from Guthrie Bowron.
And an old brass thingy was bought of Trade Me for $16.
But lets start at the beginning of the story.
This is how it looked before the $18 makeover...
The office was OK as it was,
it was functional.
But there was too much clutter,
not a lot of organisation, too many wires,
and not a lot of pretty!
This tiny wee room (it's 1.2 metres by 1.50 metres)
is where I spend a whole lot of time,
so I thought I would make it a bit more ME.
I'm quite fond of the green colour
( sorry colour unknown)
A touch up here and there was all that was needed.
While I was rummaging through the tins of paint in the garage
looking for the paint for the touch ups,
I found some Grey (no name on the tin) Dulux paint.
It was a bit too dark,
so to 1/2 of that, I mixed in 1/2 white for a softer grey colour.
And that spruced up the desktop.
The pin/mood board was turned around and hung horizontally.
A large metal cross was relocated from the hall,
and positioned beside the pinboard.
A driftwood heart made...

A  gorgeous artwork of a moth that was drawn by my daughter
was put in a frame from the cupboard and hung.
Pens were popped into daisy wire containers that were ex-candle holders.
A whitewashed crate was put to the side to use as an 'inbox'.
The hulk (alias the printer)found a new home
atop an old chest of drawers with vintage handles,
this was moved to the office from a bedroom.
The office chair carried many a coffee stain,
the $2 piece of fabric recovered it.
and became a padded cushion on top of the rattan stool.
Also to be used as a back support on the computer chair.
This is how I made it:

A piece of striped fabric was popped into the mouse pad cover.
I know that many would shout paint it!
But the wood edge of the desk remains as is in it's wonderful shabby state.
The wicker rubbish bin,
which had most definitely seen better days
was bound around the top with some jute string.
Yes, I know that it's 'rustic',
but it blends well with the rattan stool.
I made sweet wee chalk board labels made from recycled cardboard...
(We're sticking to the rustic theme!)
Baskets for storage and a pretty metal vase
were rehomed to the office from other areas of the house...
A potted orchid was brought inside from the deck.
But then I changed my mind....
as you do!
For an orchid in a yellow pot,
because I thought a little more colour would look nicer.
(The orchid is white when flowering).
And here is what it looks like now.
Isn't it fun when you buy something just because it's cute,
and then you find out it is valuable?
This is what happened with this...
advertised as a Curlycue Thingy on Trade Me.
I thought is was cute and would be useful in the office
for those random bits of paper,
so I bought it -$16 including postage.
And as I am a naturally curious person, sat and googled it,
because I wondered what this brass darling was really used for.
Research revealed its history,
and it's fascinating to know that I have a little 'Downtown Abbey' in my office!
The curly cue thingy is actually a Victorian 1890's brass letter holder
- value about $100!
What a lovely surprise!
I made some cute embellished button and embroidery pin tacks for the notice board...
Tutorial for how to make these is here:

An old coaster was covered in pretty fabric
(see how to do this here:)
http://miabellapassion.blogspot.co.nz/2015/02/diy-coffee-coaster-fabric-makeover.html
No more coffee rings on the desktop!
So can you see how you can create a whole new look,
at a minimal cost, with a bit of effort and time,
just by thinking through what you already have?
And making a few selective purchases...

Before...
 and after...
I'm loving my restyled office space!
Birds, art, French Country and a little shabby rusticness...
An office with
touches of the things I love!

DIY Cute Button Pin Tacks...

I'm still beavering away at the office makeover,
and the room has suddenly developed pops of yellow!
Button Craft
The pot plant got switched,
as I thought the black pot was just too big.
The new orchid is potted in a crackle glazed yellow pot!
Then that meant that I covered the coffee coaster in a yellow-toned fabric.
All that was needed was some new thumb tacks...
And look what I found in the button stash!
The cutest yellow-toned buttons and embroidered flowers.
Button Craft
Perfect for the upcycled thumb tack idea.
I saw this somewhere in Pinterest land.
And what a cool idea it is!
Button Craft
Here is the Mia Bella Passions version...
You'll need:
A hot glue gun
Pin tacks
small buttons
small embroidered flowers
Button Craft
All you do is put a dab of hot glue on top of the pin tack
and press the button or embroidery flower tightly on to it.

And that is it.
Super simple and super cute,
DIY button pin tacks for your office or craft room mood board.

DIY Coffee Coaster Fabric Makeover...

The 'Let's make the home office beautiful project' continues
with a coffee coaster a makeover.
Nothing worse than coffee cup rings all over the desk,
(Did I mention I LOVE coffee?)
So a pretty coaster was the obvious answer!
Fab excuse to use some pretty fabric from the stash...
All I did was paint over the picture on a coaster with white paint.
This created a neutral back ground for the fabric.
After the paint is dry cut fabric to fit,
leaving a fold over edge.
Then glued (mod podged) the fabric on top.
When it was dry I folded the fabric under the coaster and glued it.
Cover with a layer of mod podge...
As you can see the Mod Podge will dry clear.
Leave for 24 hours,
then spray it with a clear enamel sealer.
And there you have it...
a pretty Fabric covered coffee coaster for the home office.

DIY Chair Cushion...

Here's a quick way to make a small cushion
- perfect for a little back support while working at the computer.
Upcycle a pillowcase for the backing.
Cut to desired size.
Mine is rectangle.
Cover front with desired fabric using machine stitch.
Stuff it with pillow foam and stitch shut.
When not in use as a back support,
this cushion can dress up the vintage rattan stool in the office.
Only a few more things to do
and then you will see the office makeover...
coming soon - I promise!

DIY Chalkboard Labels...

Right now I'm LOVING anything chalkboard...
so I thought I'd whip up some chalkboard labels for the home office makeover.
Label templates are freely available on the Net.
Here are a few to choose from...
Cute heart shaped labels from;
and
funky shaped ones from;
http://www.soubelles.com/2012/03/diy-chalkboard-labels.html
Print out the labels,
cut out,
and use as a stencil on heavy cardboard.
Cut the cardboard shapes out...
Paint with chalkboard paint.
Leave dry.
When dry, punch holes for twine to hang.
Chalk the tags with words....
 Hang
Or glue to attach.
Yes - I'm definitely loving chalkboard labels!

DIY Shabby Chic Valentine Heart...

Dried hydrangea flowers and white paper doilies
were the inspiration
for this pretty
Shabby Chic Valentine Heart....
To make one you will need:
Cardboard
Glue & Hot glue gun
Dried hydrangeas
Ribbon
and some embellishments of your choice.
.-.
Cut out a heart template,
Stencil shape on to a piece of sturdy cardboard.
Enlarge the shape if necessary.
Glue the paper doilies onto the cardboard heart.
You will need to trim them to fit...
Here's the cardboard heart with the doilies glued on.
Now you're ready to glue on the hydrangeas...
I love hydrangeas...fresh or dried.
They bring back memories of my Grandmothers Garden.
Place as desired on the heart,
Then hot glue into place.
 Attach a ribbon hanger.
And some embellishments of your choice.
I used a lovely chalkboard heart...
Onto which I penned the word,
which is the whole purpose of Valentines Day...

LOVE!
